 Bill Mantlo

Mornin’ folks!

Did everybody see the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trailer? Looks alllll kindsa good,
right? Right! Everybody got Blue Swede’s ‘Hooked on a Feeling’ stuck in their head
too? Bueno. Bueno.

All the talk coming from Marvel is that Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper)
will be the star of the show. Let’s be honest, now, how could a talking raccoon who
digs giant guns NOT be the star of this film?

Rocket (do NOT call him a raccoon) was created in 1976 by Bill Mantlo and Keith
Giffen and first appeared in the back-up feature in ‘Marvel Preview’ #7. In 1985 he
was given his own 4-issue limited series written by Mantlo with future Hellboy
creator Mike Mignola on artistic duties. He appeared sporadically over the years
before resurfacing in 2007 as part of the ‘Annihilation: Conquest’ story, and he’s been
part of the Guardians ever since.

Now, for the sad news  In 1992, Bill Mantlo was injured in a hit and run accident. He
suffered sever head trauma and was in a coma. He came out of the coma but has brain
damage and is now in full-time care. Greg Pak has set-up a donations page to help
Mantlo’s brother, Mike, with the cost of his care.
