Good evening true believers and welcome to another one of my Musings, this one split a lot of people when it first got announced, when the first picture got released some people made it into a meme and continued to slam the upcoming movie.
I was not one of those people.
When Ben Affleck got announced as Bruce Wayne/Batman for the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, there was a major outcry from fans, some so displeased went as far as making a petition to remove him from that role. As Kevin Smith has said on so many of his wonderful podcasts about how when Michael Ketton was confirmed as Batman in Tim Burton’s take on the Dark Knight, people were outraged even then, until a picture was released and everyone shut up.
Is it possible that fans are too harsh on who gets cast as characters that they’ve grew up with? Hell, Gal Gadot was announced as Wonder Woman people actually complained on her body size, saying she didn’t look like an Amazon would.
Are we that picky that we’ll go show our displeasure at a casting of an actress without actually giving them a chance to show what they have to bring to that role?! The first picture of Gal in the Wonder Woman costume was shown at SDCC and I have to say……..DAMN! Anyone want to retract their previous statements?
Now fast forward from the announcement of Ben Affleck last year to SDCC this year and the footage that was shown there, not only did we see Batfleck in a different suit than before, and not just any Batsuit, the suit that Bruce takes on Superman with in the somewhat overrated The Dark Knight Returns. I have issues with some parts of that book, but that’s another topic for another day. To see that suit means that the movie won’t just be a one sided fight, it means that the damn title of the movie will live up to what it says! BATMAN V SUPERMAN!
While some people have changed their opinion from “remove Affleck” to “looking forward to this” due to those pictures, there are still some people out there hating the idea of Ben Affleck being Bruce/Batman. If you’re a fan of movies he’s been in or not, you have to admit that the guy has talent and has worked in a number of different roles, only getting better with age and EXPERIENCE.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ben Affleck was asked about the outcry from fans and had this to say “There’s a lot of active fans with a lot of opinions.” To me, having been through a certain amount of that, it doesn’t really… Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I wouldn’t have taken the part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking.”
What will he bring to Batman that we haven’t seen before? We will have to wait until the movie is out, but I for one have been behind this incredible actor from day one when he got the role, I believe in Batfleck!
The main question I want to have answered is why do we get outraged at role castings so much with any acting evidence to reinforce our view? (Mar
