We’ve know for some time now that Ra’s al Ghul is going to feature prominently in Season 3 of Arrow. The role hasn’t yet had a casting confirmed but one actor, Liam Neeson, who has previously portrayed the character has spoken in an interview with MTV regarding the role.
When asked if he’d been approached about the role he had this to say:
“No, I haven’t, I haven’t at all. I would, in a heartbeat, if it came my way, yeah, very much so.”
Clearly Neeson has a fondness for the character as he then went on to offer insight into how he feels the character is best portrayed with the following statement intended to offer whoever is cast in the role his own bit of assassin’s guidance.
“They have to believe in their philosophy. Ra’s al Ghul absolutely believed what he was doing was ultimately saving civilization, and it was quite a good argument he comes up with. Throughout the ages this fraternity, that brought the plague to wipe out a section of mankind because it needed to be regenerated again. Very dangerous, but you have to believe it.”
Neeson certainly proved popular in the role during Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but would his casting take away from the fresh new direction Arrow has taken so far? Would it distract from the show’s own well earned reputation but connecting it to another version of the DC universe which has already run it’s course?
I think a fresh take on the character would be a much better decision, and given the role is likely to run for multiple episodes an actor of Neeson’s calibre may be a wee bit out of the show’s price range for much more than a cameo anyway. But it would certainly be a fun nod to his previous role.
