Star Trek

It feels like forever since we last had a Star Trek show on TV, 10 long years ago the underrated entry in the series Enterprise was cancelled leaving fans with nothing but dead air. Since that time we have witnessed a revival of sorts with a spin off in the new J.J. Abram’s helmed movie series which saw a second cinematic universe created to the side of the “Prime” one we all grew up with which has done incredibly well at the box office. In the meantime, the Prime universe exploits have continued in Tim Russ’s Star Trek Renegades web show and the mmo video game created by Cryptic, Star Trek Online. Both are officially sanctioned as canon but are far enough removed from the series and movies that they have little real effect on the universe as it was left after the events of Enterprise.

The original Star Trek will be 50 years old next year and CBS have decided it’s time to bring Star Trek back to the masses primarily though their own streaming service, CBS All Access, but are also looking to make deals with networks around the world. “Every day, an episode of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” added Armando Nuñez, President and CEO of CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce ‘Star Trek’s’ next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

The new Star Trek show is said to introduce totally new characters but no one has confirmed if this will be set in the cinematic universe, the Prime (TV) universe or some third universe we have not yet encountered. One thing that has been pointed out by eagle eyed users on social media is that the Star Trek movies and TV shows are both handled by completely different companies, this would point to the show being a continuation of the original Prime universe however the creative team features both Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci who worked on the recent movies with J.J. Abrams so it could be either.

As a fan of the franchise for many years it is hard not to get excited about a new show based on the beloved franchise and regardless of where it is set I will be watching this from start to finish. The new series is due to begin in January 2017 and is likely to be a huge event for old and new fans alike.
