REVIEW: Blacksad

Hi everyone, Jamie here yet again to bring you another recommendation. This week I bring to you a great noir thriller called Blacksad.

Blacksad was created by spanish writer Juan Díaz Canales with art done by former Disney animator Juanjo Guarnido, who has worked on such movies as Tarzan, Brother Bear and Hercules.

Blacksad was originally published in 2000 by French company Dargaud with the first volume called Somewhere Within the Shadows. Dargaud would then go on to publish two more volumes in France. The second volume Arctic Nation was released in 2003 and the third volume Red Soul in 2005. In 2010 Dark Horse published all three volumes in English, collected in one hardback book.

Blacksad is set in America during 1950. All the characters in the comic are animals and the main protagonist is called John Blacksad, a private investigator and black cat. Each volume has its own story and puts Blacksad in a different situation in each volume: Somewhere Within the Shadows shows Blacksad investigating the murder of an old flame from his past; Arctic Nation tells the story of Blacksad searching for a little girl whilst dealing with a faction of white supremacists; and Red Soul has Blacksad trying to find out who is trying to kill his friend.

The art and writing in this comic are fantastic. Juan Díaz Canales writes this comic like it’s a classic detective movie. Each character has their own personality and they all sound very different. Juan Díaz Canales’ writing is brought to life with art from Juanjo Guarnido. The art in this comic is great and Juanjo Guarnido really does a wonderful job making each character look human, even though they’re animals.

This comic is a fantastic read and a great crime thriller. Hope you enjoyed reading this and hopefully you’ll go and read Blacksad.
