Another month and another IDW published TMNT series hits the shelves. Not that I’m complaining, anyone who follows my stuff knows that it’s one of my favourite franchises ever so the more the better I say. Although there have been a couple of blips in terms of quality (Casey and April I’m looking at you) for the most part IDW has been exceptional in their treatment of the four brothers. This series is a chance to tell stories away from the main series without the constraints of the continuity that series would bring.

The main story deals with Baxter Stockman being targeted by a mysterious new foe and it’s up to the turtles to save the maniacal scientist who usually acts as their enemy. Paul Allor is on writing duty and he has experience in the IDW TMNT comics so he knows the characters and the dialogue shows that with Mikey being playful and Raph being a grumpy arse……even more so than usual here. It’s an intriguing, if not spectacular start to the series that nicely sets up the next issue with cliffhangers and twists that will no doubt keep the reader interested in what’s happening next. The art from Damian Couceiro is solid enough but nothing stand out and falls short of some of the other artists that have been involved in the franchise since IDW took over. I like his Turtles designs but this new enemy has very basic, cliched design that I’m not digging at all.

The real attraction for me here is the back up story that sees series co creator Kevin Eastman and the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz on artistic duty over Tom Waltz’ script. It’s great to see two of my favourite artists with wildly different styles, work together and the results are lovely. It’s a very basic Leonardo vs The Foot story reminiscent of Leo’s solo issue from the old Mirage series and that also ends with a bit of a cliffhanger so it’ll be nice to see how that unfolds but really it’ll just be awesome to see more of that wonderful art.
