So we’re at the end of the first arc of IDW’s new spinoff series and things have wrapped up nicely. I didn’t think we’d be starting off with 4 issue arcs as the project seemed to be promoted as one and done style stories much like Shadow Of The Bat did back in the 90s with Alan Grant writing. Not that I’m complaining, I just read it wrong. So I’ll assume you’ve read my other reviews on the the first three issues so you know where we are story wise, if no it’s best to go check them out first. Zodi and the turtles are still trying to escape the Baxter building while the siege led by Bishop continues. I’m liking the addition of Bishop as a new human adversary as the constant introduction of new mutants can lessen the impact of the ones we have. There’s nice moments again involving Mikey being the heart and soul of the family which always sits well with me.

I’ve been up and down about Damian Couceiro’s art, praising his panel placement and clear sequential action. That said there are some very lazy panels with characters missing facial features and the character of Zodi having an incredibly bland design. The backup story as always saves the day in terms of art with Eastman and Sienkiewicz delivering a gritty and unique style for the bare bones but fun backup of Leo going through a gauntlet of villains.

So with the first arc coming to an end I have high hopes for this series but I hope it delivers on it’s promise to focus more on the fringe characters of the TMNT universe, villains, heroes and everyone else. It has a real chance to become something incredibly interesting and act as a  conduit for fleshing out characters that some might not know much about in the main series. It worked well for Batman in the 90s and I’m on board for more IDW Turtles comics because they nearly always nail it. Fun times ahead.
