Scarlett Johansson to star in live-action ‘Ghost in the Shell’

According to Variety, Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has now signed on to play the lead role in DreamWorks’s upcoming live-action adaptation of classic manga and anime title Ghost in the Shell, ending months of speculation about her possible involvement.

The casting of Johansson, coming so soon off the back of her roles in Lucy and the Avengers franchise would suggest the film will seek to emphasis the action elements of the source material, but exact details of the story are not known at present, nor whether the film will look to Masamune Shirow’s original manga or the subsequent anime retellings for its inspiration. Currently, Rupert Sanders is set to direct, with Avi Arad and Steven Paul producing, working from a script by Bill Wheeler.
