Following on not long after Warner Brothers official unveiling of their Suicide Squad, actor Tom Hardy, who was set to play Colonel Rick Flag has clarified why he couldn’t stay a part of the project.
Tom Hardy left the project only a couple of months before shooting was due to start. Rumours circulated that Hardy was not satisfied with the script and reduction in role size however the actor himself has dispelled all these rumours and has let us know the real reason.
It turns out the reason was simply a matter of availability, his schedule just couldn’t work with the filming of Suicide Squad. Hardy’s current film, The Revenant, has quite massively overshot its production timeline by three months. It seems that this is the only thing that prevented him from appear in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, with Tom Hardy being replaced in the role by Joel Kinnaman. It also seems that he’s quite saddened by the fact that he had to drop out, as you can see in an interview with Collider below:
Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out. I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really f***ing alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…it’s f***ing alley. And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.
While Tom Hardy may have dropped out of Suicide Squad, in the same interview with Collider the actor revealed that he is not done with the world of superheroes quite yet and wants in fact to move over to Marvel.
That’s right Tom Hardy, the man who brought life to Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark KnIght Rises, would love to take on the role of The Punisher. You can see the segment of the interview where he reveals this below:
I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs].
HARDY: I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.
You as Punisher could be very interesting.
HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].
But I actually think that adds to the character.
HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?
Yeah. It’s Frank Castle.
So maybe after Bane Hardy would like to stick to darker roles, taking on the role of the man who once killed the entire Marvel Universe would let him stay dark.
So would you like to see Tom Hardy become the Punisher in the MCU? The former Daredevil showrunner said he would love to get Punisher in the show, do you think that will happen? Do you believe Tom Hardy’s reasons for leaving Suicide Squad? Whatever your thoughts let us know below or on Facebook/Twitter.
