Following their announcement last year that Production I.G. Had bought out the rights from original co-producers Gainax, it has now been confirmed that the studio will co-produce a sequel to much loved sci-fi coming of age tale FLCL (Fooly Cooly) alongside American broadcaster Toonami, due to premiere on Adult Swim in late 2017 or early 2018.

Although it was initially suggested the project would be a remake, the new 12-episode, two-season series appears to be a direct sequel, with Adult Swim having offered the following statement on its plot:

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

Series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki will return as supervisor, along with original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water)

Produced between 2000 and 2001, the first FLCL OAV series became a huge success in North America when it was shown on television, with Gainax having allegedly refused lucrative offers from Toonami to produce a sequel, stating they could do ‘nothing else with it’.
