Here’s a quick look at some of this week’s comics news stories that we didn’t get to cover!
Viola Davis, star of The Help, and new TV drama How to Get Away With Murder, was announced this week as playing DC sometimes goodie/sometimes baddie Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad film! Fans of How to Get Away with Murder will know how good a casting decision this was. In this show, Davis plays a no-nonsense law professor who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation along with her students, while also trying to clear the name of her husband! A tough lady who doesn’t take anybody’s crap? Sounds about right for Ms. Waller!
Viola Davis joins a star-studded cast, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, and Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress. As in the comics, Waller will most likely be the one pulling the strings of this superteam, sending the Squad on missions too dangerous for normal Government agents.
Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released on August 5th 2016.
Earlier in the week there were rumours that Liam McIntyre, star of Spartacus, had been spotted on the set of The Flash. It turns out those rumours were true, as it has been revealed that he will be playing Mark Mardon, better known as the Weather Wizard! Mardon returns to Central City for revenge for his brother Clyde’s death, setting out on a mission to find the man that shot Clyde, none other than Detective Joe West!
The Flash resumes airing on January 20th in the US, with no specific date announced for its return on UK screens.
The LEGO Movie was one of the biggest movies of 2014, and one bit of news nobody was expecting was that a LEGO Batman spin off, based on Will Arnett’s character in the film, would be released in 2017. Co-writers and directors, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, spoke more on the spin off, stating that “every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged” and that the film will ask the question “Can Batman be happy?”. Arnett described the action scenes he saw of the film as “mind-boggling”.
Fans of Battlestar Galactica rejoice! Edward James Olmos, who played Commander Adama in the hit space opera, will be joining the cast of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD! All that is known so far is that the Blade Runner star will be playing a character called Robert Gonzales (whose name doesn’t match up with any current Marvel comic character) and his appearance will have “massive consequences” for Agent Coulson! How delightfully vague!
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD returns from its mid season break on March 3rd (in the US).
